Resources in the Geopark Territory: Between History, Heritage Enhancement, and Sustainable Development

A meeting at the State Archives of Enna to reflect on the roots of the landscape and the future of local communities
On May 7, 2025, the State Archives of Enna hosted the event “Resources in the Geopark Territory: Between History, Heritage Enhancement, and Sustainable Development”, a multidisciplinary workshop promoted as part of the MIC’s Sustainable Development Festival and the Geopark Week of the Rocca di Cerere UNESCO Global Geopark.

A Dialogue Between Memory and the Future
The day was dedicated to rediscovering the cultural, environmental, and social value of the Rocca di Cerere UNESCO Global Geopark through a dialogue between institutions, artisans, cultural operators, and citizens—an opportunity to discuss sustainable best practices, the reactivation of collective memory, and the promotion of local resources.

A Heritage to Be Showcased: The Exhibition “In the Breath of the Earth”
The event also featured the opening of the exhibition “In the Breath of the Earth”, an industrial archaeology display showcasing archival documents, historical photographs, and original artifacts from the collections of the State Archives of Enna and the Ethno-Anthropological and Emigration Museum of Valguarnera.
The exhibit tells the story of landscape transformations shaped by mining activities, migrations, everyday life, and the labor of local communities—concrete testimony to the deep bond between geology and anthropology, between territory and identity.

The Geopark as a Space for Cultural Sustainability
This initiative reflects the vision of the Rocca di Cerere UNESCO Global Geopark as an educational, ecological, and creative space, where local resources become tools for active citizenship, innovation, and social cohesion.
Through events like this, the Si.M.Geo. Ecomuseum System demonstrates how it is possible to combine the enhancement of the past with the construction of a more sustainable, inclusive, and conscious future.
